FAILURE LEADS TO SUCCESS – Learn from mistakes View failures as feedback that provides you with the information you need to learn, grow, and succeed.
When we live the Key of Failure Leads to Success we see failures as feedback, we learn from them and make the changes needed to be more successful in the future.
To live this Key successfully we may need to change the way we think about failure. Rather than viewing failure in a negative way where we put ourselves down and think WE are a failure, think of failure as a valuable learning experience. When we look at our mistakes with a view to learning from them, rather than sending ourselves negative messages, we are on the path to success.
1st Grade
When studying inventors and inventions we discuss Thomas Edison who failed over and over when inventing the lightbulb. We use Thomas Edison as a jumping off point for a discussion about not giving up and trying again.
2nd Grade
*Through out the year second graders study historical figures and learn how they show persistence and perseverance.
*During the writing process second grades show failure leads to success when learning the revising and editing process to improve their final piece.
*During Rocket Math, second graders need to learn if they fail the first time they can always try again the next day.
*Students use an "I" statement when faced with a behavior issue so that they can resolve the problem.
*When students complete science experiments and the results don't come out the way they were supposed to, they learn from their mistakes and try again.
3rd Grade
STEM Projects - Chair Caddy, Astronomy - students are given a challenge and a set of criteria. Students are asked to design a product, collaborate with classmates to determine a final product, build and test the product. There are times when a product has not worked as the students initially thought and they had to revise their plan and test again.
Facts Fluency - students work to master addition and multiplication facts using a timed program. Students understand they are not going to meet their goal every time.
4th Grade
Working in Social Studies - students are given the task to create informational posters/trading cards about the battles and important people of the Texas Revolution. For each students must include what character keys those people showed. Multiple groups decided that the Texas showed "Failure Leads to Success" when they kept battling the Mexican army even after losing the Battle of the Alamo.
5th Grade
Talking about all the failures Lincoln had before he became the President of the US.
I feel as when we as teachers admit to a failure, we are automatically "humanized" and seen in a different light.
During Science investigations, our hypotheses do not always align with our data and conclusions, however we teach that repeated trials and perhaps resigning of the experiment can lead to better results and more success.
Reminding students that scientists fail and redesign all the time.

Music
In music class, we use failure leads to success in several ways. Our recorder karate in 3rd grade is a prime example. Students learn a songs, each with a different challenge and objective for the lesson. Students get to practice at home and during class time. When the individual student is ready, the student may test to earn his/her belt. Students learn not only the important musical objectives, but also that "failure leads to success".

In the Library, I love to tell students the story of Jon Scieszka's experience as he worked toward getting his book, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs published. Students know this book and love it, and they are shocked to hear that his book was denied by his publisher over 20 times! But he never gave up, and the result is a well-loved book. There are many stories of perseverance and persistence, both in fiction and biographies.
Special Education
Our students encounter many academic and social challenges on a daily basis. They each have individual Educational Plans that allow teachers to meet them where are so they can achieve success. They gain a confidence to move themselves forward and progress in their learning. Our students' problem-solving skills help them to learn to cope with different situations.
